From Sour Grapes to Sweet Wine: Transforming Careers for Your Success

A Journey of Growth and Expertise

Failure is a stepping stone to success, an essential part of the journey. Just as one cannot learn to walk without falling, the lessons from our stumbles shape our future triumphs. Walking is essentially a series of controlled falls; everyone learns to walk, but not everyone does so correctly, often leading to stress and pain later in life. Similarly, early career failures don't guarantee future success. The key is learning to apply the lessons from those failures to new opportunities. The same skills that fail in one context may be the root of success in another.

I am not shy to admit that I’ve failed my way into doing the work I love. My career is a patchwork of various jobs and self-employment ventures, especially in my early years. It took two decades and a role as a senior business manager to realize I was on the wrong path. Every experience, skill acquired, and stressful chapter molded me into a better career mentor and coach.

Halfway through my career, I learned to purposefully build the right kind of resume with the ‘right’ experience, skills, and education to develop a targeted brand. This is what is meant by ‘content is king’ in a resume. Through this process, I achieved my goal of securing a management position. Although it was not the right role for me, it allowed me to gain an insider’s understanding of the hiring manager’s mindset, confirmed through interactions with senior hiring managers across various organizations, including professional engineering and financial firms.

As my career progressed, I developed a competitive resume and a non-traditional cover letter style that resulted in an impressive rate of interviews and job offers, even for senior positions I felt underqualified for. This unique value proposition became clear, and I realized my true calling: teaching, mentoring, and career coaching.

For over 15 years, teaching at the college level provided a wonderful platform, and as I’ve progressed, my private coaching evolved from a side gig into my main focus. Now, I split my time between teaching part-time and dedicating myself to helping clients overcome their career challenges.

Unlike most career coaches, all the members of my immediate family have benefited from my expertise and are engaged in careers they highly value.
